Snapshot of CAUDIT Member Representatives

CAUDIT has recently been delving through some data relating to the CAUDIT member representatives and you may be interested in a few facts about the membership representation which spans university and research organisations in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, PNG and Timor-Leste.  CAUDIT now has 59 members with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and ANSTO joining in recent months.

As with the ICT industry at large though, we often see new faces amongst our Member Representatives – the CIOs/CDOs/IT Directors, etc.  On average, we have seen nine new substantive appointments to these roles across the CAUDIT membership each year since 2009.  This is not surprising given these appointments are generally via fixed term contracts of between three to five years.

Period in Post:

As at late July, 18 representatives (31%) have been in post less than one year and another 10 (17%) less than two years.  At the same time, we have nine representatives (15%) who were appointed before 2009 – so a significant amount of valuable HE/research experience is available to our newer representatives.  One of the best ways to access this is through attendance at CAUDIT’s biannual Members Meetings.  (The next one of these will be held 19-20 October in Brisbane.  You can grow your network in an instant when you become a member rep!)

Appointed from within/outside the sector:

The mix between representatives appointed from within the sector and from outside is another valuable aspect of the membership representation.  Currently, 24 representatives (41%) have been appointed to their role from outside the HE/research sector and 35 (59%) from within.

Gender diversity:

With regard to female participation, and including some acting appointments, nine (15%) of the current 59 Member Representatives are female.  This is on a par with the ICT industry at large; significantly less than our education CIOs in the USA and Canada, but on a par with counterparts in the UK and significantly more than in Japan and South Africa.

The chart below summarises the 'Years in Post' for current Australian and New Zealand CAUDIT member representatives of each of CAUDIT's three membership categories.
