History of AHECS

CAUDIT Member Representatives prioritisation Cybersecurity as the number 1 initiative for CAUDIT to review in 2018. CAUDIT, AARNet and AusCERT through a workshop in March 2019 in partnership formed the Australasian Higher Education Cybersecurity Service (AHECS). REANNZ joined the partnership in November 2019 and the AAF joined in March 2020.

An initial presentation outlining the service was delivered at the CAUDIT Autumn Members meeting in May 2019. The CAUDIT Executive approved the business case and funded the strategic direction for 2020, including the appointment of a resource to support the outcomes in 2020 and 2021.

Progress was presented to members at the CAUDIT Spring Members meeting in October 2019. Following the meeting the AHECS Advisory Council, Executive Steering Committee and Operations Group Terms of Reference were developed, nominations sought for the Advisory Council and Forum. The first AHECS Services Prioritisation survey to Member Representatives and the CAUDIT Cybersecurity Community of Practice to prioritise services was released in November 2019.

The AARNet Security Operations Centre (SOC) was successful in receiving AustCyber funding for industry-led projects in February 2020. The AARNet project is developing a Security Operations Centre to help institutions to monitor, detect and respond to cyber threats.
