Progressing Equity and Overcoming Bias in Academic Recruitment
presented by Interfolio from Elsevier
How can universities recognise the holistic contribution of academic staff and adopt practices to help them advance their careers and research?
Technology has the potential to advance equity in all its forms. But it is not just about hiring and promotion - other academic events need to be scrutinised in the same way. This includes having review and promotion policies that do not place an undue burden on certain disciplines and ensuring that workloads are equitable across academic staff members of different ages, genders, and ethnicities.
It is also about recognising the importance of a range of activities. According to Professor Margaret Sheil, PhD, Vice Chancellor of Queensland University of Technology “we need to look at people’s careers more inclusively and reward other behaviours, such as being a generous collaborator or mentor.”
The good news is that progress is being made. Working with Professor Sheil the Elsevier International Center for the Study of Research have developed a recruitment dashboard to create a more even playing field, whilst Interfolio from Elsevier is supporting universities worldwide with an Academic Information System to manage academic recruitment and promotion in an equitable and transparent way.
In this showcase Interfolio will introduce the recruitment dashboard and then dive into the benefits of Interfolio’s solution, exploring how data can support universities make more equitable decisions and reduce bias throughout the whole academic lifecycle.
